Buddy Up: Who’s Your Buddy?

It’s time to Buddy Up! The Pokémon GO Buddy Up event has now started for most, if not all, Trainers around the world! Due to limitations and restrictions, this event seems to be the perfect balance of enjoying Pokémon GO and keeping individuals healthy and safe.

Since we have covered the event basics in our Buddy Up Infopedia, we are now going to take some time to discuss which Pokémon would benefit most from being your buddy during this 7-Day BuddyFest.

MAXIMIZE YOUR BUDDY TIME

During this event, each interaction with your Buddy (play, feed, battle, walk, photo, bonuses, and visiting new places) will earn you 3x more Buddy Experience than you normally earn. On top of that, this means your buddy will become excited MUCH faster and allow you to level up with it quicker. However, we ask the question, Do you really have to fill all those hearts? Based on the feedback from one of our writer Fam, MFitz, (who already has 15 BEST BUDS) he will usually skip the three walking requirements and the visit a new stop requirement. Generally, he will get six hearts with one buddy, then switch seven times, getting one treat, play, snapshot, and battle heart with each. Every hour or so, he gives his current buddy a treat. When that reaches all hearts, he switches six times and gives each buddy another treat. An hour or so later, he finishes the cycle of giving everyone a treat and his day is complete. Did we mention that he doesn’t use Poffins? MFitz swaps buddies 18 TIMES A DAY! DAYUM! That sounds like a lot of work. In order to do this, you need 72 Berriesto fight the Team Leaders 8 times, and often you’ll find a Smeargle. A lot of the time one or two Buddies will get a walking heart just by being there but it doesn’t happen all of the time. We do want to remind everyone that you do lose affection points when switching out, so it’s probably best to do it in a way that keeps it minimal. Also there is a glitch that if you switch all 20 times in a day, the counter takes 24 hours to reset instead of reseting at midnight.

**UPDATE SINCE EVENT START**

Typically you have to wait an hour to give more treats to your buddy to get a heart (ie 2 berries or 1 premium berry.) Due to the even tripling the duration of each berry, you must wait 3 hours to feed your buddy and get another heart! If you feed your buddy in the first hour the treat bar won’t move, if you feed your buddy after 1 hour, but before 3 hours, the bar will max out again, you won’t get a heart, and you will have to start over. While this doesn’t totally negate the above strategy, MFitz has informed us of a new one he is trying.

The newest strategy takes advantage of the halved walking distance and super quick excitement. It seems a buddy gets excited after only 7 interactions. Therefore the new strategy is to feed a treat to, play with, take a snapshot of, and battle with your buddy. If you are able to go outside, walk on a treadmill, etc, start walking. You should be able to log 2 km really quickly and your buddy will get excited. At this point your buddy will have 7 hearts. Feel free to continue walking, you’ll need 2 more km, but you do want to once again play with, take a snapshot of, and battle with your buddy – making sure to skip the treat part this time. You could get up to 13 hearts in 30 minutes, 15 if you can find a new stop. At this point you can either switch your buddy or wait out the 3 hours. If you decide to wait it out – make sure you play with and take a snapshot of your buddy every 30-40 minutes or it will start to get less excited. Every time you switch buddies it is suggested to roll through all your current buddies (up to 8.) This new setup makes it harder to keep 8, while 7 is easier to max out. I guess it comes down to if you want 1 more heart for 7 Pokémon or a bunch for an 8th.

If you are unable to walk your buddy, don’t feel bad. You just need to wait the 30-40 minutes since your first interaction and  play with, take a snapshot of, and battle with your buddy again. This will get it excited.

Which Buddy's to Prioritize?

When we look at which Buddy’s are the best picks to prioritize during the Buddy Event, there are different angles of approach: PvP, Candy, and Rarity (like Regional / Mythical / Legendary).

Since MFitz typically swaps out seven different Pokémon Buddies on a daily basis, we are going to try to give you seven top pics for each topic along with a few additional options in case you don’t have the ones listed!

DIALGA
Dialga Official Artwork

Dialga should definitely be on top of your priority list. Dialga is a monster in Master League, and has an amazing win/lose ratio. As you can see, it gains 3 wins at level 41, including the important mirror match. We suggest to only invest time in a good IV Dialga, with at least 15 attack and at least 14 defense.
ORIGIN GIRATINA
Origin Giratina Official Artwork
Win Ratio L40Win Ratio L41
W: 221 L: 31 D: 1W: 224 L: 29 D: 3
Another great performer in Master League. Giratina gains 3 wins, and just like Dialga, it shines in the mirror match. Winning all CMP ties, the invested time pays off in a mirror lead. Imagine getting that Ominous Wind boost as well…
TOGEKISS
Togekiss Official Artwork
Win Ratio L40Win Ratio L41
W: 175 L: 76 D: 2W: 177 L: 74 D: 2
This cute flying fairy is a great pick to level up. It turns 2 losses into wins at level 41, which is great. Togekiss is a Charm user, and Charm RIPS APART. Although it can be walled, its charged moves still provide some coverage if you’re able to farm a bit.
MEWTWO
Mewtwo Official Artwork
Win Ratio L40Win Ratio L41
W: 217 L: 35 D: 1W: 221 L: 32 D: 0
Mewtwo is a very versatile Pokémon, with an extremely diverse move pool. We chose to go for Psycho Cut as fast move, paired with Psystrike and Ice Beam. With this move set, level 41 Mewtwo gains 4 wins, including 3 that were originally losses. Mewtwo can give you great coverage, and don’t forget Psystrike hits like a truck.
REGISTEEL
Registeel Official Artwork
Win Ratio L40Win Ratio L41
W: 246 L: 94 D: 1W: 248 L: 93 D: 0
Registeel is a very good pick for Great and Ultra League, but only benefits from the Best Buddy level in Ultra League. Maxing under 2500CP, this trashcan enjoys a little stat boost! Gaining 2 wins, it doesn’t look amazing, but it needs that boost to perform good in the mirror matches!
SABLEYE
Sableye Official Artwork
Win Ratio L40Win Ratio L41
W: 392 L: 153 D: 5W: 397 L: 147 D: 6
Sableye gains 5 wins in the great, and turns 1 draw into a win as well. As you can see, a level 41 Sableye flips over 6! losses. Being a great pick in the open Great League meta, Sableye is a great pick to buddy up! Keep in mind that Sableye maxes under 1500CP, so you want to prefer a 100% to level up.
MEDICHAM
Medicham Official Artwork
Win Ratio L40Win Ratio L41
W: 411 L: 131 D: 8W: 421 L: 124 D: 5
Turning 7 losses into wins, and gaining a total of 10 wins, a level 41 Medicham doesn’t disappoint! Medicham has great play in the Great League, with a diverse move pool. Here, we looked at Medicham using Counter paired with Dynamic Punch and Ice Punch. Keep in mind that Medicham maxes under 1500CP, so you want to prefer a 100% to level up.

Wild Card Picks

KyogreGarchompMetagross
These three can definitely replace any of the above if you don’t have a particular Pokémon in your storage, lack a good IV one or if any of the mentioned above don’t fit into your play style and strategy. Keep in mind that this is not a tiered list, and any of these Pokémon can be replaced by a Pokémon you prefer.
DARUMAKA

Darumaka makes the list because of how good its evolution, Darmanitan is. Darmanitan, for now, is the Fire-type king when it comes to DPS. It will only be knocked off the throne by Reshiram when/if it ever gets released.
RIOLU

If you are like us, you have some Riolu that you would like to evolve, and even add a third move too, but you have an extreme shortage of Riolu candy. This event is a prime opportunity to stock up on that precious Riolu candy.
TIMBURR
Darumaka Official Artwork
Buddy DistanceCandy to Evolve

Why Timburr you ask? The answer is simple, Conkeldurr. Conk is perhaps pound for pound the best Fighting-type in the game. But why make Timburr your Buddy? Well, say you get a really good Timburr in a raid, you won’t be trading it to lower the candy cost to evolve it, so, you will need a LOT of candy.
GIBLE
Darumaka Official Artwork
Buddy DistanceCandy to Evolve

Garchomp performs extremely well both in PvE and in PvP. Stocking up on Gible candy would be a wise move since you will want to max some Garchomp, and probably even give a few that third move.
SCRAGGY
Darumaka Official Artwork
Buddy DistanceCandy to Evolve

Scraggy and its evolution, Scrafty, are relative newcomers to Pokémon GO. Few people have the candy to max out a good one yet, unless your a rare candy hoarder. *cough* MD *cough*. Making an investment into Scrafty is extremely worthwhile, as it makes a significant impact in Great League.
AXEW

Have many of you have a Haxorus (Alex put your hand down)? I see not many of you just raised your hand. This event will be a great time to walk an Axew and stockpile up that candy so you can evolve a Haxorus army!
DEINO
Darumaka Official Artwork
Buddy DistanceCandy to Evolve

The last Pokémon on this list is Deino. While its evolution, Hydreigon, got absolutely screwed with its moveset, you can still use it in PvE, and the middle evolution, Zweilous, definitely has a place in PvP. It is for these reasons we feel Deino would be a good investment.

SnorlaxGroudonArticuno
These three can definitely replace any of the above if you don’t have one of the Pokémon listed above in your storage.

Essentially, our rare picks come back to candy.

Mythical/Legendary
If you think about it, Mythical and Legendary Pokémon require a ton of walking to earn a single candy. Well, since it’s 1/2 walking distance, now is a better time than ever to earn candy for them.

Regionals
This is a rare occurrence, but let’s not forget our regionals who require candy for evolution. Perhaps you traveled at one point and found one or two of a regional but not enough to evolve…or, maybe you did a trade for a regional but you need more candy to evolve…let’s get to earning, shall we?

DEOXYS (DEFENSE FORME)

Darumaka Official Artwork

If you have played GO Battle League, specifically Great or Ultra league, you have probably run up against Defense Deoxys, and if you were not prepared for it, probably got destroyed by it. Defense Deoxys is tricky, because you cannot trade for it. The only hope you have is that you saved some from EX Raids and they have decent IV’s.
MELMETAL
Darumaka Official Artwork

Melmetal is an absolute beast in PvP and in TGR Battles. This event allows you to farm up some Melmetal candy if you don’t have access to a Nintendo Switch.
CRESSELIA
Darumaka Official Artwork
Buddy DistanceCandy to Evolve
10 kmn/a
Cresselia can be used, and used well in all three leagues. Where it shines the most though, is Ultra League where it ranks #3 overall. It would definitely be beneficial to make Cresselia one of the Pokémon you level up with during the Buddy Up! event.
DARKRAI
Darumaka Official Artwork
Buddy DistanceCandy to Evolve
10 kmn/a
Darkrai is very good, but imagine if it had gotten a better moveset, it would be a beast. Although a pure Dark-type, it has access to Shadow Ball, which makes it a top-tier Ghost-type.
MEW
Darumaka Official Artwork
Buddy DistanceCandy to Evolve
10 kmn/a
Mew is the ultimate generalist. If you have the TM’s you can give it any type moves you want. The only way to get Mew candy is via rare candy or making it your buddy.
SAGE/SEAR  FAMILIES
Darumaka Official ArtworkDarumaka Official ArtworkDarumaka Official Artwork
Buddy DistanceCandy to Evolve

The elemental monkeys, why do they make this list? Chances are you can find someone to trade you one of them, but, evolving it is a different story. I for one, will not spend rare candy on the monkeys. So, the only way they will be getting evolved is by earning candy via the buddy system.
THE LAKE TRIO

If you have been lucky enough to trade from one of the Lake Trio not from your region, then chances are you will need candy to max it. While none of them are great in PvE or PvP, they can be used in a pinch.

ArchenRoggenrolaTirtouga

These three are the rares from Gen V. Speaking for myself I have only hatched 2 Archen and 1 Tirtouga so far, and have only caught 1 wild Roggenrola. Farming up some candy for them would be a wise move.
