Leveling up to 50 – Tips and Tricks

Previously, we posted an article outlining all the known requirements to achieve each new GO Beyond level. In the process of reaching those levels, a few tips and tricks have emerged. Personally, I was able to reach level 46 before I ran out of XP, though I’ve been in contact with other Trainers of all experience levels during their GO Beyond quest. Here’s what we’ve discovered that could help you prepare to GO Beyond to level 50 on your own schedule.

Big ticket tips

These are things you can do right now before you even attempt to GO Beyond to level 50 that will help you when you reach later leveling challenges.

  • Walk 2 Eevees, one to become an Umbreon, one to become an Espeon for Level 41.
  • Collect evolution items through battling with friends or against a Team Leader for Level 42.
  • Have at least 200 berries for Level 42.
  • Having a Giovanni radar will help during the Level 45 challenge.1
  • Save up Shadow Pokémon that only cost 1,000 stardust to purify for Level 45.
  • If you are thinking about maxing any Pokémon before getting to Level 47, consider not taking them all the way to Level 50. Save the final level up for when you get to the Level 47 challenge.
  • Get as many buddies to Ultra as possible for Level 48.
  • Keep Pokémon hatched from long-distance eggs or acquired from long distance remote raid invitations for trading to get to Level 49.
  • Hold off doing your guaranteed lucky trades if you are near to Level 48 as you will need 50 lucky trades to get to Level 49.
  • Start tracking your platinum medals to work on those you are closest on. This might be the limiting factor for a lot people.

Tips for each level

Total XP Required
26,000,000
Level Up Tasks
Power Up a Legendary Pokémon 20 times
Meltan counts as a Legendary Pokemon, so powering up level 1 Meltans are the least expensive way to accomplish this task.
Win 30 Raids
You all know how to raid. My only advice here is to use this step to also work on the following Medals: Battle Legend, Champion, Rising Star, and Rising Star Duo.
Catch 200 Pokémon in a single day
Running a Meltan box and catching every one will help with catching 200 in a single day.  It will get you almost half-way there under the current incense boost. Regular incense will assist with this step, as well.

Level Up Tasks
Evolve Eevee into each of its unique Evolutions
As mentioned at the start, walking 2 Eevees ahead of time will mean that you only have to wait for day or night to evolve those. To get a Glaceon and a Leafeon, you need to evolve under a Glacial or Mossy Lure. Coordinate with a friend, so you each only deploy one and then let others in your community know they are available. There are naming tricks for each of the Eeveelutions. If you have not used them yet, those are the only way to guarantee evolving Jolteon, Vaporeon, and Flareon.  I don’t think this step is worth wasting that trick if you haven’t used it yet, so I’m going to force you to look up the names on your own if you really want to use them.
Use items to evolve Pokémon 15 times
You can earn evolution items by battling your friends or a Team Leader.
Make 3 Excellent Throws
Use 200 Berries to help catch Pokémon
Total XP Required
42,500,000
Level Up Tasks
Earn 100,000 Stardust
Use 200 super-effective Charged Attacks
You can earn credit for the super-effective Charged Attacks by battling against a Team Leader, battling in a Gym, battling against friends, or battling in GO Battle League. I think the quickest way to maximize this task is to Battle a Team Leader with lower-level Pokémon and not hitting any of the bubbles on the Charged Moves. There are a lot of combinations of teams that will allow you to get between 7 – 10 Charged Moves per battle. I used 3 Riolu against Blanche’s Great League team for an average of 8 super-effective Charged Attacks per attempt.
Catch 5 Legendary Pokémon
As in an earlier step, a Meltan counts in this task. Fire up another Meltan box from HOME.

Level Up Tasks
Defeat 100 Team GO Rocket Grunts
Make sure you have reached Page 2 of the Level 43 Special Research while you are working on this task. If you have a Giovanni radar, equipping it will help with this task since each decoy counts as a Grunt.1 You will need to unequip it before your balloon generates, or you will see Giovanni and waste what could have been a Leader or a Grunt.
Purify 100 Shadow Pokémon
Though the stardust requirements for this seems steep, you will earn at least 500 stardust for defeating each TGR Grunt and 1,000 for each TGR Leader, plus at least 100 for catching each Shadow Pokémon. If you have saved up the least expensive Shadow Pokémon, this step is not nearly as bad as it first seems to be.
Defeat 50 Team GO Rocket Leaders
Make good use of balloons. If you always have a Rocket Radar equipped when balloons generate, the TGR Leaders will come to you! While Jessie & James do not count as Grunts, they can help you gather 2 Radar pieces with each battle, which might help with this step, but probably not much as trying to get the balloon to generate a Leader encounter with an equipped Radar.

Take a Snapshot of a Pokémon 7 days in a row
Do not ignore the “in a row” part of this task. If you miss 1 day, the entire task will reset, and you have to wait another 7 days. This is the first task that acts as a time gate.
Make 50 Excellent Throws
If you are on Page 1 of the Level 45 Special Research, these Excellent throws will chip away at the Nice throw task.
Hatch 30 Eggs
There are 2 strategies here. You can hatch a lot of 2 km eggs to make it go more quickly. Or speculation says that the Level 49 challenge will require you to trade Pokémon with friends, possibly 500 km distance trades. If you hatch 7 km eggs from distance gifts in this step, you will have distance Pokémon ready to trade.

Level Up Tasks
Win 30 Raids using a team of all unique Pokémon species
Figure out what bosses are in raids and set up unique teams to defeat them so that if you are invited to a raid, you can just flip to that unique team quickly. If you can get to Page 3 of the Level 45 Special Research, doing the 30 raids in this step will count for the 45 raids in that research as well.
Win a 3-Star Raid using only Pokémon with 1500 CP or less
You can set up a team for this step as well. You can also raid with a friend if you think your Pokémon aren’t up to the task and return the favor to them when they need assistance.
Power up 3 Pokémon to their max CP
Only Pokémon that have been powered up to Level 50 while you are on this step will count towards it. If you have powered any up to Level 50 before this step, they will not count. If you have gathered enough Candy XL to max a Pokémon, you might want to take it to Level 49 and then wait until you reach this step to finish it off to Level 50. You can also coordinate this step with a friend. If you each have enough Candy XL to only get a Pokémon about halfway to Level 50, you can level it up and swap. So, for example, you have enough resources to get a Gyarados and a Beedrill halfway, and so does your friend – you level up the Gyarados and swap it for your friend’s Beedrill, then you can each finish them off with the resources you still have. This would work exceedingly well for a Lucky trade. This is by far the most difficult of all the tasks in any of the challenges to this point. See a special section at the end that talks about how to earn Candy XL. It is cheaper to level up a Purified Pokémon than a regular Pokémon so don’t forget to take a look at which Shadow Pokémon will have good stats after you purify them.

Level Up Tasks
Receive 10 Souvenirs from your buddy
Buddies need to be at least Ultra in order to bring you souvenirs, so you might want to work on buddying Pokémon now. (The ones you plan to take to Level 50 are great candidates for this.) You can’t really control which Pokémon will bring you souvenirs, but in theory, if you have not played with one for a while, it is more likely to have a souvenir for you when you finally do engage with it again. So far, it appears that 4 days is the mark of “neglect” that guarantees your buddy will bring you a gift. Unfortunately, that does not guarantee that the gift will be a souvenir. If you have received a souvenir from a buddy, you will not receive another one that day, even from a different buddy.
Earn 300 hearts with your buddy
You can change your buddy 20 times in a day. You can earn hearts from feeding, playing, taking a photo, and battling with each buddy fairly quickly.  That’s 4 hearts in just a couple of minutes. If you cycle through multiple buddies, you can earn 300 hearts long before the 8 weeks in the last task are up.
Walk 200km with your buddy
This does not need to be accomplished with only one buddy. If you can get to Page 2 of the Level 45 Special Research task, this will overlap with the task to earn candy with your buddy.
Walk 25km in a week 8 times
This one has an 8 week time gate if you keep up with it every week. If you miss walking 25 km in any week, the time gate will start over. So do your best not to miss a single week of walking 25 km if you want to accomplish this as quickly as possible. maybe don’t sweat it? The wording doesn’t say “in a row” but Niantic has made mistakes with this type of thing in the past. We have to wait a little bit to see if it reset for anyone in the world.

I got stuck here while Team GO Rocket was gone from the game. If you want to rush through this page, you should have a lot of radars saved up.
Earn 48 candies walking with your buddy
This step matches well with the Level 48 challenge to walk 200 km with a buddy.
Catch 480 Pokémon
This is a great page to be on during a big event like Community Day. The notification that you caught a Pokémon is addictive when you’re fast catching. You’ll be sorry to see this one go when you’ve completed it.

Catch 480 Normal-type Pokémon
If you don’t know your typings by now, you will become very familiar with which ones have a secondary Normal-typing. A Normal-type Spotlight hour or Community Day would be ideal for this task.
Win 14 raids
For many of us, this is just a normal Wednesday raid hour. But these don’t have to be T5 raids, any raid level will do.

Level Up Tasks
Make 10 trades with Pokémon caught at least 300 km apart
Opening gifts from friends who live far away when you have open egg spots is the key here. The search string !traded&distance300- will return all the Pokémon you have that meet this requirement. Take note, that this will give you Pokémon 300 km away from where you currently are. If your trading partner uses the same search string you may accidentally end up with 2 Pokémon that came from close to each other. Always check the distance displayed in the trade screen to be certain.
Obtain 50 Lucky Pokémon in trades
The easiest way to get a Lucky trade is to complete a trade with a Lucky Friend. As you near this level, consider waiting to complete your trades with Lucky Friends until you reach Level 48. The more Best Friends you have and the more daily interactions you have with them, the more likely you will be to get Lucky Friends. You can also try for random Lucky Trades by mass trading with a friend. You can do 100 Trades per day. This is especially easy to do any time Niantic opens up the trade distance to 40 km!  The last time I did random trades with a friend, I got 3 Luckies from roughly 20 trades.
Send 500 Gifts to friends
This might be the most challenging because it relies on cooperation from a large number of other Trainers. You can send 100 Gifts per day. At a bare minimum this step will take 5 days to complete. The search term giftable will help you figure out who can receive a gift from you. Other than asking your friends to prioritize opening your gifts, there’s not much you can do to prepare for this task. It will require you to spin Pokéstops and send gifts every time you reach the max number that you can hold.

Niantic’s statement describes this challenge this way, “To reach the highest available level in Pokémon GO, you must master all aspects of the game. Some examples include making Excellent Throws, catching Legendary Pokémon, and defeating Team GO Rocket Leaders with Pokémon under 2,500 CP.”

To be honest, by the time you get to this point, you shouldn’t really need any advice. If you can’t land Excellent Throws on your own or catch 1 Legendary out of 5, you probably shouldn’t be a Level 50 Trainer.

Make 500 Great Curveball throws
It would be good to search out Spinda field research tasks (Make 5 Great Curveball throws in a row) while you’re on this step. Add the challenge of “in a row” to this step to finish it off in groups of 3.
Spin PokéStops 15 days in a row
Make 5 Excellent throws in a row
You might want to load up on Gible field research tasks (Make 3 Excellent throws in a row) while you’re on this task. If you’re going to do 5 Excellents in a row, get as much bang for your effort as possible.

Page 2
Hatch 50 Eggs
Oy. This one will take a while if you only use the free Incubator. If that’s the case, concentrate on 2 km Eggs.
Win 15 times in the GO Battle league
Keep an eye on which leagues and special cups are available. Great League is typically the most accessible for people but if you are a raider who doesn’t love PvP, Master League may be where your Level 40+ Legendary Pokémon can shine. You will probably have plenty of time to find the right league for you because the next task is …
Catch 5,000 Pokémon
This is a great page to be on during a big event like Community Day. The notification that you caught a Pokémon is addictive when you’re fast catching. You’ll be sorry to see this one go when you’ve completed it. Thankfully, most Trainers will be stuck on this step for a long, long time.

Earn 50 candies walking with your buddy
Evolve 50 Pokémon
Even though you’ve made it to the top level, you can still maximize your XP by doing this when you have a Lucky Egg running. (Level 60 is probably coming some day!)
Win 50 raids
OK, this might be 2 Wednesday raid hours or 1 good Saturday when a really desirable T5 boss is out.

Earning Candy XL for Maxing Pokémon

In general, there is a lot of speculation about the best way to gather the Candy XL needed to power up a Pokémon to level 50. Though we can’t speak with final authority, there are a few things we have observed that seem to be true:

  • The higher level a Pokémon is, the more likely it is to give Candy XL both upon catching and transferring. Therefore, catching weather boosted Pokémon is a really great strategy.
  • Make use of boosted spawn times: Community Day, Spotlight Hours, Nests, etc. Any time a Pokémon is likely to be encountered with high frequency, that makes it a good target to gather Candy XL.
  • Law of Diminishing Returns – There is speculation that the more Candy XL you earn during the day through transferring, the fewer and fewer you will receive. While this is not confirmed, we wanted to pass it along so that you can keep an eye on it. If you feel like you’re receiving fewer, the more you transfer, stop transferring until the next day.
  • You get a guaranteed Candy XL from trading 2 Pokémon caught or hatched more than 100 km apart. It’s a great strategy to save up even lower level Pokémon for distance trades to build up that XL store.
  • Walking a Pokémon Buddy can earn Candy XL. This is especially true if your Buddy is in the excited state. It will take less distance to earn both regular and XL candy.
  • Though it is rare, feeding berries to Pokémon in gyms can earn you Candy XL. Take this into account when you are dropping in a Gym; pick a Pokémon that you want to earn XL for. Also feed other Trainer’s Pokémon when you see them in Gyms.
GO Beyond Level 40 Section Header

Do you need to GO Beyond?

That’s a question only you can answer. Some people play a little each week, have fun with their friends, and don’t care about levels or achievements. Others are hardcore grinders and want to “Be the Best There Ever Was” in all aspects of the game. Most people will fall somewhere in the middle. No play style is right or wrong as long as the style doesn’t have a detrimental effect on your mental health, real-life responsibilities, or wallet.

Thankfully, there will always be some who want to go first to pave the way for the rest of us. I’ve been part of that expeditionary crew for as far as my XP will take me, and I’ve had a blast doing so. I want to thank the local Trainers who helped me with my own quest and helped me gather these tips. They know who they are without me having to name them. As I get reports of new tips from those forging on without me, I will share them with you.

1 Using a Giovanni Radar to battle Decoy Grunts is an easy way to farm stardust, collect Shadow Pokemon, and collect Rocket Radar pieces. However, we do not recommend that you skip battling and catching any Shadow Legendaries simply to use the Giovanni Super Rocket Radar for this purpose.
