THE INTERVIEW - ON THE VERG
G2G: First, can you tell me your in-game Trainer name, level, and your favorite Pokémon? Is there a reason it is your favorite? Also, what do you do in your daily life?
VERGYVERG: Trainer Name – Vergyverg, Level – 40, Favorite Pokemon – Wartortle. Look at that mon; he’s a badass! I am a Software Engineer for USAA (United Services Automobile Association (Military Banking)). I also do quite a bit of Stock Trading for the last few years.
G2G: What got you into Pokémon/Pokémon GO? Were you into Pokémon before GO was released? What do you like the most about Pokémon in general? Do you have a favorite feature in PoGO?
VERGYVERG: I remember in Elementary School when pokemon the cartoon came out! It was huge, and I even got a few of the trading cards to trade with people at school. That theme song is just so good! My friends were telling me about Pokemon Go “coming out” for 6 months, and it just never did . Eventually, it did come out, and I was out for a friend’s birthday at a burger place, and we all tried to download the app, but it was crashing like crazy. Eventually, I got my Bulbasaur! I played for maybe 3 months, and then my friends stopped playing, and so did I. Then, a year later, I started a new job, and a ton of people at work played, so I got back into it! My favorite feature in Pokemon Go is PvP! I’ve always been super competitive, and this is a great outlet for that!
G2G: What made you start uploading Pokémon GO focused Content? Was it just something you wanted to do, or is there more to it?
VERGYVERG: When I started getting into PvP, I started watching YouTube videos about it so that I could get more informed. Almost immediately, I thought, “A lot of people are just uploading straight from their phone and not really making it a great audience experience.” Coming from a League of Legends background, I knew the audience needs to be engaged with the event! More-so than that, they need to understand what is happening at any point they walk in! So that’s what I try to do with my tournament overlay, let the fan come in and just have fun and not have to think too hard about what’s going on. I had never edited before, but I really began just to love it!
G2G: Your content is mostly PvP focused, is there a reason for that? Does PvP just called out to you?
VERGYVERG: At this point, PvP is my favorite part of the game. It’s the competition that really drives me. As I got more and more into, though, it’s the community that really keeps me going! The PvP community is so helpful, understanding, amazing, and loving! I just want to bring as many people into the scene as possible! A lot of my videos really call in a lot of the community voices to participate in random ‘fun’ videos that I create! I’ve really moved more towards entertaining! I think so much more than just battling can be done in this space, and I’m willing to try new ‘creative/weird’ ways of making teams/battling!!
G2G: If you had to pick one highlight of your time as a Streamer, what would it be?
VERGYVERG: It wouldn’t be one moment. I think one of the coolest things is people recognizing me. This works both ways, though. I have met so many amazing people along the way, and I absolutely love recognizing my new friends when I see someone I haven’t seen in several months!
G2G: Do you have any advice for people who want to get into Streaming or Battling or who have just started and are struggling to find they’re way?
VERGYVERG: There is a subreddit that I still go to called “NewTubers,” and I remember the first thing that I saw there that has stuck in my mind “If you want to start, just get started.” A lot of new people in that subreddit say how scared they are to put out their first video (an absolute real fear I had as well). It is scary, but the only way to get started is to get started. You have to make the jump and post that first video. After that, it gets easier, and you will always improve your quality! Your first video won’t be perfect, don’t let that hold you back!
G2G: Is there anything else you want to share? Hidden talents? Thoughts about the current state of the game? Price of tea in China?
VERGYVERG: I think the current start of PvP is the best it has been in quite a while! While it isn’t perfect, Niantic has shown that they actually listen and are putting in an effort to make PvP great! Hidden talent? I’m really good at racquetball!
