GBL Master League: Easy On-Ramp

Let’s get a jump on the competition for the next exciting chapter of Pokémon GO PvP in the Go Battle League. GBL has rotated to blind pick Master League. Master League is by far the most expensive of all three GBL formats. Luckily, some of your options serve a duel purpose in that they are great for Raiding as well.

DIALGA

DIALGA

FAST MOVECHARGED MOVE
Dragon BreathIron Head
Draco Meteor
Thunder

Dialga is the central figure of the Master League meta and for good reason. Boasting one of the best defensive pairings, Dragon and Steel, gives Dialga only two weaknesses and a lot of resistances.

On the offensive end, its Fast Attack, Dragon Breath, hits hard and is mostly unresisted. For its charged attacks, Iron Head allows Dialga to defeat Togekiss which usually walls Dragon-types, Draco Meteor offers game-ending power while Thunder offers additional coverage without the downside of a debuff.

Threats to Dialga:

Ground- and fighting badgeFighting-types

Origin Giratina

Shadow ClawOminous Wind
Shadow Ball

Giratina-O is the second most dominant Pokémon of the Master League meta. Offensively, Giratina-O is a great generalist thanks to Ghost-type moves being widely unresisted. Defensively, Giratina-O is a great partner for Dialga as both cover each others’ weaknesses well.

Threats to Origin Giratina:
fighting badge
Normal-, fighting badgeDark-, and fighting badgeFairy-types.

MELMETAL

MELMETAL

FAST MOVECHARGED MOVE
Thunder ShockSuperpower
Rock Slide
Those who own Let’s GO Pikachu/Eevee should be excited to hear that Melmetal is one of the premiere Dialga counters in Master League. As one of the few Pokémon able to resist most of Dialga’s attacks and hit back for Super Effective damage with Superpower, Melmetal is able to dominate the Dialga matchup.
Threats to Melmetal:
fighting badge
Fire-, fighting badgeFighting-, and fighting badgeGround-types.

Swampert

SWAMPERT

FAST MOVECHARGED MOVE
Mud ShotHydro Cannon
Earthquake

With Grass-types expected to be seen less in Master League, Swampert should be able to operate even more freely than it has in Great/Ultra League.

While countering Dialga, Swampert is also capable of checking many of the other Dialga counters as well, namely Melmetal.

Threats to Swampert:
fighting badge
Grass- and flying badgeFlying-types.

MACHAMP

MACHAMP

FAST MOVECHARGED MOVE

Rock Slide

Machamp is a dynamic option for taking down Dialga with its fast counter damage and energy-efficient charge attacks.

With Rock Slide, Machamp is capable of fighting back against the Flying-types of the Master League Meta.

Threats to Machamp:
fighting badge
Psychic-, flying badgeFlying-, and flying badgeGhost-types.

Togekiss

TOGEKISS

FAST MOVECHARGED MOVE
CharmAncient Power
Flamethrower
With how popular Dragon-types are expected to be in Master League, Togekiss is an intriguing option as it is the only viable Charm user, and being Flying/Fairy also helps Togekiss protect your own Dialga from Ground- and Fighting-types.
Threats to Togekiss:
fighting badgeSteel-, fighting badgePoison-, fighting badgeRock-, fighting badgeFire-, and fighting badgeIce-types.

DRAGONITE

DRAGONITE

FAST MOVECHARGED MOVE

Outrage

If you do not want to run Dialga, but still would like to Dragon Breath your opponents, look no further than Dragonite.

Like Dialga, Dragonite is an amazing generalist, but runs counter to many of the ways opponents are likely to prepare to take down opposing Dialga. If you can keep your Dragonite off of opposing Dialga, Togekiss, and Melmetal, you may find yourself in a winning position.

Threats to Dragonite:
fighting badge Ice-, fighting badgeDragon-, and fighting badgeFairy-types
