TRAINER LEVEL: 40
FAVORITE POKÉMON: BLAZIKEN
CLAIM TO FAME: PVP GURU / WEB DEVELOPER
THE INTERVIEW - THE MASTER SPEAKS
G2G: First, can you tell me your in-game Trainer name, level, and your favorite Pokémon? Is there a reason it is your favorite? Also, what do you do in your daily life?
PvPoke: Hey! I’m KakunaMattata42, and I’m level 40. Even though it’s not part of one of my nicknames, Blaziken is my favorite Pokémon! The Hoenn games hold a special place in my heart. By day I’m a web developer, and by night I’m a sleepy web developer.
G2G: What got you into Pokémon/Pokémon GO? Were you into Pokémon before GO was released? If you had to pick a favorite feature in Pokémon GO, which one would you choose? I think I already know the answer, though, haha!
PvPoke: My parents thought I would grow out of Pokémon eventually, but that definitely wasn’t the case! I got started with Pokémon Yellow on Gameboy Color, ended up missing Generation 4 on the DS, but picked the series back up with Pokémon Black & White. I actually didn’t have a smartphone at the time Pokémon GO released, so I ditched my flip phone pretty quickly! Of course I’m a huge fan of Trainer Battles. While I don’t raid as much anymore, I used to focus on raid challenges.
G2G: What made you decide to start making a website for Pokémon GO PvP simulations? I can imagine you spend a lot of time working on the site. Do you get help, or is it all you?
PvPoke: I always wanted to make something for Pokémon GO, and PvP was the perfect opportunity to build something new. It’s definitely a time sink! It’s mostly just me, but I can’t go without mentioning the great feedback and contributions from the community on Github, Twitter, Discord, Reddit, or elsewhere. Shout out especially to the “mechanics” team for helping me research the nuts and bolts of the game and providing great suggestions.
G2G: What is your favorite feature of PvPoke, and why? Do you have any big plans or dreams for the website?
PvPoke: I’m most proud of the Training Battle feature, which allows people to play out battles in real time against a bot. When I started PvPoke I wanted to keep it small in scope, but when I got the ambition to do this feature I kind of tossed that out the window. I hope it’s been helpful! I don’t have any particularly grand plans, so I’m just happy to keep the site going as it is.
G2G: A fun one. Three options, only one answer, and we’d like you to explain why you picked that particular option over the others. Would you rather:
– win every GBL battle, but not enjoy it at all?
– lose every GBL battle, but have the time of your life?
– never play a GBL battle, but get 20k Stardust a day?
PvPoke: I’m A-okay losing every battle as long as it’s fun! That’s what it’s all about, right? GBL can be a frustrating experience, but I look to enjoy it whether I’m using spicy teams or studying the game.
G2G: Is there anything else you want to share? Hidden talents? Thoughts about the current state of the game? Maybe some suggestions for Niantic?
PvPoke: I have a ton of different hobbies I bounce between, including programming, art, violin, and writing. Maybe I’ll find a way to mash them all together!
Cowboy Hat Caterpie, please?
It has been an honor and privilege to get to know PvPoke better during the interview process. Thanks to him, a lot of battlers are where they are today thanks to the valuable and essential knowledge he provides. He is quite literally, a PvP royalty, and we couldn’t be more excited to share everything we learned about him. Be sure to give PvPoke a follow on Twitter and give his Github page a view as well!
