The Interview – Nothing is Ever too farfetch’d
G2G: First, can you tell me your in-game Trainer name, level, and your favorite Pokémon? Is there a reason it is your favorite? Also, what do you do in your daily life?
BPS: My IGN is bdewalt (first initial, last name), I’m level 40, and my favorite Pokémon is Farfetch’d. I think I always loved how it was seen as the underdog, but could do more than it let on. In daily life, I’m an accountant!
G2G: What got you into Pokémon/Pokémon GO? Were you into Pokémon before GO was released? What do you like the most about Pokémon in general? Do you have a favorite feature in PoGO?
BPS: I got into Pokémon about 20 years ago. I watched the anime religiously, played in TCG tournaments around the city I lived in, and of course, played the video game as well. My parents first bought me Pokémon Blue for my 10th birthday, and from there I was totally hooked. I think one thing about Pokémon that I love is what it teaches people. The games were social at a time when that wasn’t a thing. Rather than only battle, or play against others, you would need other people’s help to collect everything, so instead of having a constant competitive feeling with others, you could have more of a sense of camaraderie.
G2G: What made you start uploading Pokémon GO focused AR photos? Was it just something you wanted to do, or is there more to it?
BPS: I used to do a lot of automotive photography for fun. Living in Southern California, it’s pretty easy to find car shows. As I started attending those less and less, I decided I wanted to try photographing something else, and figured that mixing that with Pokémon would be fun, so here we are today!
G2G: I know I’ve read the story about how Farfetch’d image below has a special place in your heart, but for those who do not know, would you care to share that story with us here?
BPS: Hah, I love that story. So, my wife and I were on our honeymoon back in 2016, and we were in Hong Kong. Neither of us had Farfetch’d yet, and obviously really wanted to catch one, as we’d be in Hong Kong and Tokyo for two weeks. The game didn’t have Nearby yet, so we were stuck with Insights, and we didn’t have data there, so we relied on the 7-Eleven WiFi while we were out and about.
So, one day we’re walking through the city one day, and we get to a 7-Eleven, we pull up GO and there’s a Farfetch’d on Insights! So we’re both freaking out a little because we can only move so far from 7-Eleven before the WiFi drops out. We looked around but nothing popped up…but then I saw another 7-Eleven a couple blocks down. We decide to run to that 7-Eleven, we get there and open the app and, boom, Farfetch’d pops up right in our faces! We were both so excited, we were like jumping up and down hah. Since then, Farfetch’d and I have walked 3,366.7km together, and I typically just walk with him, unless a Special Research task requires otherwise!
G2G: Is there anything else you want to share? Hidden talents? Thoughts about the current state of the game? Price of tea in China?
BPS: Hmm, hidden talents? Well I can juggle . As far as the state of the game, I think the team at Niantic has come a long way, and there are just so many different ways to play GO now, which just makes me happy to see. I love that there isn’t one right way to play Pokémon, and as GO has added more features, you feel that concept running through it as well. Niantic has really done a lot to make this game something I’ll continue to open on a daily basis for the foreseeable future!
